How Custom Mobility Solutions Help Combat the Progression of Multiple Sclerosis

Writer: Rehab MedicalRehab Medical

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, impacting their mobility and overall quality of life. As the disease progresses, it can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, fatigue, and coordination difficulties, making everyday tasks increasingly challenging.

Fortunately, advancements in assistive technology have provided individuals with multiple sclerosis with innovative solutions to help maintain independence. Custom mobility solutions, particularly power wheelchairs with advanced features, offer tailored support to accommodate the unique and evolving needs of those living with MS.

By understanding the correlation between multiple sclerosis and custom mobility solutions, individuals battling MS can be empowered with the tools needed to enhance their comfort and independence.

What is Multiple Sclerosis and What Causes It?

MS is considered a chronic disease that attacks parts of an individual’s central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. It’s also believed the condition is related to an immune-mediated disorder, meaning the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in the central nervous system.

When the central nervous system is affected, it disrupts the flow of information between the brain and body functions. When this disruption occurs, it can cause symptoms such as fatigue, memory loss, mood changes, mobility issues, numbness, pain, tingling, and vision impairments.

Although not every individual with MS will experience the same symptoms, as the condition affects each person differently, many may face mobility challenges that require personalized solutions. This variability can make it difficult to find suitable treatment options. However, thanks to the clinical trials conducted by the International Advisory Committee in 1996, MS has been categorized into four possible stages:

  • Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS) refers to a ‘first episode’ of neurological symptoms that may or may not fully develop into MS. Symptoms vary from person to person but commonly include bladder dysfunction, vision problems, difficulty balancing, walking, speaking, and swallowing. If CIS is identified and treated early, it can delay the onset of multiple sclerosis.

  • Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) is the most common form of MS. RRMS is characterized by clearly defined attacks of new or worsening neurological symptoms, known as relapses or exacerbations. These attacks are typically followed by periods of partial or complete recovery, or remission. Nearly 85% of Americans diagnosed with MS have RRMS.

  • Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS) is usually caused by a progression of RRMS. SPMS—a neurologic function that causes rapid decline in stability. Symptoms of SPMS vary, with some individuals experiencing periods of relapse, while others have periods of stability.

  • Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS) is considered the most severe form of MS. PPMS is characterized by a steady deterioration of neurological function from the onset, without periods of relapse or remission, though some may experience brief periods of stability. Approximately 15% of Americans with MS have PPMS.

What Makes a Custom Power Wheelchair Ideal for Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis?

Given that MS is a neurological condition that disrupts communication between the brain and body while also causing chronic fatigue and numbness, a custom power wheelchair can serve as a vital support system. Features like power tilt and power recline help counteract these challenges, enhancing comfort and mobility. Here’s how:

  • Power Tilt lets the individual shift their body weight to relieve pressure and prevent possible skin breakdown. It is especially beneficial for those who suffer from chronic fatigue and numbness.

  • Power Recline allows the individual to fully extend their body, promoting even weight distribution and healthy blood flow. It also allows users to lie flat for resting, stretching, or reducing muscle imbalances.

Additionally, custom power wheelchairs support recovery after energy exertion. Utilizing features such as articulating footplates and adjustable seating provide users with stability and comfort, making daily activities like cooking, cleaning, and bathing more manageable. Here’s how:

  • Articulating Footplates help maintain the correct knee-to-heel ratio when the legs need to be elevated for blood flow stimulation or reducing the occurrence of muscle spasm.

  • Adjustable Seating is a great feature for individuals with PPMS, as it provides a custom-molded seat and back cushion designed to care for spinal, muscle, and nerve health.

When Should Someone with Multiple Sclerosis Consider Using a Custom Power Wheelchair?

However, since MS affects each person differently, a custom power wheelchair may not always be the first or most appropriate option. Just as multiple sclerosis progresses in stages, so do mobility aids. Individuals exploring mobility options should first consult their healthcare provider and undergo a mobility assessment to determine the most suitable solution for their specific needs.

What Other Solutions Help Maintain Mobility Independence for Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis?

Receiving an MS diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but it is not a life sentence. Individuals with MS have numerous options to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

“When diagnosed with MS, it shouldn’t be seen as the end, but rather as an opportunity to embrace life differently,” said LeMay. “With the right mobility solution, individuals can continue enjoying activities like going to the park with friends or exploring the outdoors without exhausting their energy.”

Research from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society suggests that low vitamin D levels may increase the risk of developing MS by weakening the immune system. Understanding this connection, individuals at any stage of their MS journey may benefit from increasing vitamin D levels to help manage symptoms. Additionally, stress and anxiety can contribute to the progression of MS symptoms. Learning effective strategies to manage these factors can be an essential part of managing MS symptoms.

Final Thoughts

While MS presents significant challenges, individuals are not without options when it comes to maintaining mobility and independence. Custom power wheelchairs and other assistive devices play a crucial role in alleviating symptoms, reducing fatigue, and promoting an active lifestyle. However, since multiple sclerosis affects each person differently, mobility solutions should be tailored to meet individual needs, and professional guidance is essential in determining the best course of action.

In addition to mobility aids, lifestyle adjustments such as proper nutrition, stress management, and vitamin D intake can further support symptom management. By leveraging these resources and solutions, individuals with MS can continue to lead fulfilling and engaged lives.
