Understanding the Importance of an ATP

Writer: Rehab MedicalRehab Medical

Individuals with certain conditions that restrict their mobility often require a complex power wheelchair to provide them with the best possible solutions to optimize their mobility. At Rehab Medical, we’re committed to improving lives one mobility solution at a time, and a key part of that mission is our team of Assistive Technology Professionals (ATPs). These highly trained specialists play a crucial role in ensuring individuals receive the most effective mobility equipment tailored to their specific needs. But what exactly is an ATP, and why are they so important? Let’s break it down!

An Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) is a credentialed specialist who evaluates complex rehabilitation technology (CRT) for individuals with mobility challenges. ATPs are certified through the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA), meaning they have extensive knowledge of mobility solutions, including power and manual wheelchairs, custom seating systems, and other adaptive equipment.

Why an ATP?

Mobility challenges are not one-size-fits-all, and a proper assessment by an ATP can be life-changing. Without expert guidance, individuals might end up with equipment that doesn’t fully support their posture, pressure relief, or movement needs. ATPs bridge the gap between medical needs and practical solutions, making it possible for individuals to regain mobility and improve their quality of life.

Not all mobility providers have in-house ATPs; instead of outsourcing evaluations, we have a dedicated team who work directly with patients, ensuring a more patient-first approach to our mobility care. Having ATPs on our team allows us to:

  • Offer faster evaluations and equipment recommendations

  • Provide personalized service from experts who understand our company’s commitment to care

  • Ensure quality control and consistency in delivering the best mobility solutions possible for our patients
