Will Cold Weather Affect My Wheelchair Battery?

As temperatures drop, many wheelchair users may wonder how the cold weather can impact their power wheelchair or scooter battery. If you’ve noticed a difference in battery performance during the winter months, you’re not alone! Cold weather can affect the battery’s lifespan and overall functionality. But don’t worry; there are many ways to protect your battery and keep your mobility equipment running smoothly all season long. Batteries, commonly found in power wheelchairs, operate best at moderate temperatures. However, when exposed to colder conditions, they may:

  • Lose charge faster: Weather slows down the chemical reactions inside the battery, reducing its efficiency.

  • Take longer to charge: The lower the temperature, the slower the battery absorbs power, which can lengthen charging times.

  • Overall lifespan decreases: Frequent exposure to extreme cold can cause long-term damage, leading to a battery that needs replacement sooner than expected.

Keeping your wheelchair or scooter in a temperature-controlled environment, for example, inside your home, helps prevent excessive exposure to the cold. We recommend putting an insulated cover over your equipment if you need to store it in your garage or shed. If your wheelchair has been in the cold, bring it inside and allow the battery to reach room temperature before using it. This helps prevent straining power on the batteries.

If you notice a significant decrease in battery life or performance, we recommend having the equipment professionally evaluated. A mobility technician can assess whether it’s time for a replacement or if adjustments can be made to improve functionality.

While winter can present challenges, staying proactive with battery care will help keep your wheelchair running smoothly. Our team is dedicated to ensuring you have the mobility independence you deserve, no matter the season. If you need battery maintenance or replacement assistance, Rehab Medical is here to help! Feel free to give us a call at 866-424-4500, and our mobility experts will eagerly assist you.
